There’s an easy fix for skin that looks dull and rough: exfoliation. New skin cells are created in the skin’s lower layer and take about 30 days to travel to the skin’s surface. As they travel, they die and become saturated with keratin, which protects the skin from outside elements. Exfoliation is a process that removes the outermost layer of skin to reveal the newer, more keratin-rich skin beneath. Shedding this outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean and reduces breakouts.
Exfoliation can be done using an abrasive device or lotion. A microfiber washcloth or a loofah can make a great exfoliant for the body, but it’s better to use a less harsh lotion or crème on sensitive facial skin. There are a variety of all-natural products that you can use, but I prefer a sugar scrub; it combines fine-grain sugar and natural oils to slough off your dead skin.
